April in Nairobi. The long rains have started. Waiyaki Way is a river. Mombasa Road has pools deep enough to reach car doors. Outering Road is impassable near Donholm. And your phone starts ringing.
"Fundi, my car died in the flood near Gikomba." "My engine is making strange noise after I drove through water in South B." "The car will not start since yesterday's rain."
Welcome to rainy season — the most chaotic and profitable time of year for Kenyan garages.
What the Rain Does to Cars
When a car drives through deep water, several things can go wrong:
- Hydrolocking: Water enters the air intake, fills the cylinders, and the engine tries to compress water (which does not compress). Result: bent connecting rods, cracked pistons, destroyed engine. Repair cost: KSh 80,000–250,000+ for engine rebuild.
- Electrical damage: Water reaches the ECU, fuse box, alternator, or starter motor. Symptoms: car will not start, warning lights everywhere, erratic behaviour. Repair cost: KSh 10,000–80,000 depending on what is damaged.
- Brake water contamination: Water gets into brake drums and between pads and discs. Brakes feel spongy or make grinding noise. Repair cost: KSh 5,000–15,000.
- Rust acceleration: Water sits in underbody cavities, door sills, and floor pans. If not dried properly, rust starts within days. Prevention cost: KSh 3,000–8,000 for proper drying and treatment.
- Interior flooding: Carpets, seats, and insulation get soaked. If not dried within 48 hours, mould grows. The car smells terrible. Cleaning cost: KSh 5,000–15,000.
Preparing for the Rush
The garages that make money during rainy season are the ones who prepare BEFORE the rain starts. By March, you should have:
- Air filters in stock: After driving through water, the air filter is the first thing to check and replace. Stock 30+ for common models (Fielder, Vitz, Demio, Note). KSh 15,000 investment.
- Spark plugs: Water-damaged engines often need new plugs. Stock common types. KSh 10,000 investment.
- Electrical contact cleaner: For drying out connectors, ECUs, and fuse boxes. 10 cans minimum. KSh 5,000 investment.
- Brake cleaner: For cleaning water-contaminated brakes. KSh 3,000 investment.
- A proper air compressor: For blowing water out of engine bays and electrical compartments. If you do not have one, rainy season pays for it in one week.
Total preparation investment: KSh 33,000. One hydrolocked engine repair pays for all of it with profit to spare.
The Rainy Season Service Package
Offer a "Post-Flood Check" package to every customer who calls about water damage:
- Engine inspection — check air filter, oil (water contamination turns oil milky), spark plugs
- Electrical check — scan for fault codes, check all connectors for moisture
- Brake inspection — check pad condition, dry brake components
- Underbody inspection — check for standing water, apply drainage
- Interior check — assess carpet and insulation moisture
Price: KSh 5,000 for the inspection. Most cars will need KSh 10,000–50,000 in follow-up work. Some will need KSh 100,000+ for engine work.
Prevention Marketing
The smartest play: contact your existing customers BEFORE the heavy rains. Send a WhatsApp message or push notification:
"Long rains are coming. Book a pre-rainy season check — we will inspect your air intake height, check your drainage plugs, and seal any gaps where water can enter electrical components. KSh 3,000 — could save you KSh 100,000 in water damage."
This positions you as a proactive, caring mechanic — not just someone who fixes things after they break. Customers remember that.
Track the Season
After rainy season ends, look at your records. How many flood-related jobs? What was the total revenue? Which services were most common? This data helps you prepare even better for the short rains in October.
Mekavo tracks every job with full details — free for Kenyan garages. When the long rains come next year, you will know exactly what to stock, what to charge, and which customers to contact.
The rain is coming whether you are ready or not. The garages that prepare are the ones that profit.
