There is no national short-stay register in New Zealand: renting your bach, crib or spare room is "visitor accommodation" under your council's district plan, often allowed at a small scale and needing resource consent beyond it. Since 1 April 2024 the platforms collect GST on short-stay bookings and pass a flat-rate credit to hosts who are not GST-registered; your direct bookings follow the normal GST rules. Mekavo Stay takes those direct bookings with no commission and keeps one calendar with Airbnb, Bookabach and Booking.com.
Mekavo is the software, not the authority. Whether you need resource consent is set by your district or city council's plan, and GST by Inland Revenue; if you are GST-registered, tell the platform so it does not pay you the flat-rate credit by mistake. A body corporate in a unit-title building may have its own rules on short stays.
Mekavo earns from the tools other businesses pay for. Stay is free for hosts — every feature, every place, your whole team. If that ever changes, we will tell you well ahead of time.
Guests pay you — cash, bank transfer, or online through your own Stripe account. The money goes to your account. Mekavo takes nothing.
