June in Hong Kong. 34°C. 90% humidity. The inside of a car without A/C reaches 50–60°C in the sun. Windows fog instantly when you turn on the fan without A/C. Driving without air conditioning in Hong Kong summer is not uncomfortable — it is genuinely dangerous.

Why Hong Kong A/C Systems Fail More

  • 12-month A/C season: Hong Kong uses A/C from March to November — 9 months minimum. Many people use it year-round for defogging. Components wear 2–3× faster than in temperate climates.
  • Humidity: 80–95% humidity means the A/C system removes enormous amounts of moisture. The evaporator drain, expansion valve, and compressor work harder than anywhere in Europe.
  • Traffic: Idling in Cross-Harbour Tunnel traffic with A/C on maximum = compressor at full load with minimal airflow through the condenser. This is the worst possible operating condition.
  • Age: Average car age in HK is increasing. Older A/C components fail more. Refrigerant leaks develop over time.

By May, before peak summer:

  • Compressors: Stock 3–5 for the most common vehicles (Corolla, Civic, CRV, Camry). HK$8,000–$20,000 investment. Markup 40–60%.
  • Condensers: Stock 3–4 common fitments. HK$5,000–$12,000.
  • Receiver driers: Should be replaced with every compressor change. HK$500–$1,000 each. Stock 10.
  • R134a refrigerant: 20+ cans. HK$3,000–$5,000.
  • Cabin filters: Stock 20+ for common models. HK$2,000–$3,000. Easy upsell.
